Renters Insurance and College Students

If you have a college student heading off to school this information is for you…

Is your student living on campus or off campus this coming school year? You may consider renters insurance if your child is going to be living off-campus. A renters insurance policy covers your child’s personal property. When you rent a home or apartment the landlord is responsible for insuring the property against damage caused by fire or other disasters.

There are options when it comes to renters insurance the standard coverage typically covers the following:

1) personal property protection – furniture, electronics, clothing
2) reimbursed living expenses – if your home is un-habitable this coverage will help you with food and a temporary place to live
3) liability protection – protects you in the event somebody sues you after visiting the dwelling that you are renting
4) guest medical protection – protects you from medical expenses one may incur should they become injured at your rental home

We highly encourage all parents with students who are living off-campus this school year to talk with us about a renters insurance policy. They are very affordable and the protection is valuable. Even if your child is not likely to have a party or invite people over to his/her apartment it is highly recommended that you carry at least a minimal renters insurance policy.

Before your child heads off to school for this year be sure to inventory all that they are taking with them in the event of theft or destruction. Take photos, video, or make a list of electronics. clothing and appliances they make be taking with them. It will save you time and aggravation in the event something happens and you need to place a claim.
